On the audience reaction to her 2023 song “Kind”

“Even with a new album out after the album that had that song on it, it is my closer. People want to hear it, and it’s a relief to say that. It’s a very positive thing. I mean, you would think it’s not a controversial thing, but amazingly, there’s been a couple instances where people have seen it as controversial.

“I first released it on my Patreon page years ago, before the record came out. It was written in 2019, so it was around for a while before it went on the album. And when I posted it on my Patreon, I talked about the inspiration of it. My co-writers, Dean Fields and Mindy Smith, and me were having a hard time with the administration at the time, and we started writing the opposite song. We started writing an angry song. And we caught ourselves about 30 minutes in, and we were like, ‘You know what? Everybody’s got their own list of shit that they don’t like right now. How about we list the things that we do love and that we want to be around? Why don’t we flip the script?’
