On a recent visit to Montreal, I learned a few facts about an extraordinary sculptor whose career skyrocketed at the youthful age of…77.
Born in 1923, Rose-Aimée Bélanger’s artistic passions were put on the back burner as she dedicated herself to being a wife and mother. In 1969, at the age of 46, she took classes in clay modeling and began to make sculptures in her basement. Within a few years she was making art full-time and soon her works, which were modeled after people she encountered in her day-to-day life, were selling for six-figure sums.
