VIDEO BONUS: Aaron Reynolds' Writing Tips
The New York Times bestselling author on writing for kids.
A few months ago, I got an Amazon alert that Aaron Reynolds had written a new children’s book. The alert was an old one from when my son was little enough to have picture books read to him, but it prompted me to check out Reynolds’ website to see what he was working on. I knew of his trilogy of Creepy picture books—Creepy Carrots!, Creepy Crayon!, and our family favorite, Creepy Pair of Underwear!—but I wasn’t familiar with his other works.
Or so I thought.
When I visited his website I realized he’d written many, many other titles my son had read and loved, including Superhero School, Caveboy Dave, The Incredibly Dead Pets of Rex Dexter, and Fart Quest, which my son raved about for years.
On a whim, I reached out to Reynolds to see if he might want to do an interview, and he agreed. We had a fantastic chat, during which I learned quite a bit about his writing process.
As so often happens, there were a few things that didn’t make it into the written piece, so I’m sharing the video outtakes with paid subscribers.
In these videos, you’ll learn why he tends to “reach up rather than limit down” when it comes to vocabulary, and the typical (amusing) questions he frequently gets from kids when he does book tours.
Please give them a watch! And if you’re not a paid subscriber, consider upgrading. Through May 30th, new annual subscriptions are just $20 (down from $50—a 60% discount).
Every interview I do takes many, many hours of work, and your support enables me to continue to keep this publication going.
